Towards a new generation
India is a major player on the global stage in regards to decorative handwoven textiles and handicraft products, which at the same time has also created an emergence for its huge domestic market, attracting local indigenous artisans to produce creative and fascinating handicraft items to compete in the international market apart from the local market.
Over the next 2-3 years, India is expected to see an accelerated growth of its product lines of handicrafts & decorative handwoven textiles, which shall definitely carve and create excitement about the future with the introduction and beginning of a new generation towards ‘Bodo Weaves & Crafts’, with the launch of BRAWFED (Bodoland Regional Apex Weavers & Artisans Co-operative Federation Ltd.)
The Bodo crafts and skills is a century old practice followed by the Bodo Tribal community of the North Eastern region is Assam, India. It has an age old rich traditional cultural background, particularly in the field of weaving and making handicraft products according to tastes and choices of its existing clientele base, and its products being admired for their rich traditional designs, colorfulness, creativity.
A common factor across this small industry is the fact that the weavers, craftsmen and artisans are very conscious of what it will take to compete in a borderless world. They realise that strict competitiveness, strong manufacturing infrastructure, support in the form of financial resources for procuring raw materials, equipments and other training sessions and facilities along with a strong marketing network will act as the bottom line for their survival and success.
A buoyant national economy and prudent fiscal policy undertaken by the Government of India, has therefore definitely started playing an important role in spurring the Bodo handicraft sector to achieve ‘Global scale operations towards a new generation’.
